We are now able to protect your puppy against six diseases by giving him an initial course of two injections between the ages of 6 and 12 weeks so that he can go out and about a week after the second injection at 13 weeks of age fully protected. This early vaccination has been made possible by the production of a new Parvo virus vaccine.
The six diseases are:-
Canine Distemper (Hardpad)
Leptospira canicola (kidney leptospirosis)
Leptospira icterhaemorrhagiae (liver leptospirosis)
Infectious Canine Hepatitis
Canine Pavovirus
Canine Parainfluenza virus
These vaccines may be given to a dog of any age. The initial course is
always two injections 2-4 weeks apart. All dogs require annual booster
doses. If a booster is missed and more than 18 months has elapsed since the last
vaccination we would normally advise repeating the initial vaccination course to be
sure of an adequate immunity.
Kennel Cough is a condition caused by several different agents of which Canine
Parainfluenza virus is just one. So your dog could still develop Kennel Cough even
after this vaccination. Further protection against Kennel Cough maybe given by
using an additional vaccine against Bordetella bronchiseptica (Intrac) but we only give this to dogs going into boarding kennels is the near future.
No vaccine can ever guarantee 100% protection. In any animal population
there may be a very small number of individuals which fail to respond. But the
vaccines we use are likely to produce the best immunity available to date.
